for those who dream

I’ve been reading David Toop’s Haunted Weather (which is an incredible read!) and along the way he describes an artist’s work as ‘the kind of music you hear in your dreams’. That got me wondering. I don’t remember hearing any music in my dreams, but I am sure that, from time to time there has actual been music in my dreams. Do you hear music in your dreams?

Since my laptop crashed a few months ago I’ve slowly been going through my cd’s, adding them back to my mp3 library. I decided that instead of doing it all in one big bang, I would time my time and listen to everything as I put it on.

When I came across Toop’s reference to dreams, I had just ripped and was listening to Klute’s Casual Bodies and Polar’s Out of the Blue. I was also playing with Ableton Live, so I thought, with all these dream references poping up all over the show, why not try and capture some of the ideas in a mix…

Both of these albums were released on Certificate 18, which is sadly no longer operational. Certificate 18 is my all time favourite record label and all the music I have from it is laced with a warm sense of nostalgia. The tracks I’ve selected here are no exception, with Klute and Polar journeying into the darker, dubbier and cinematic realms of electronica.

The soundscapes they weave are other-worldy. Some thing about them, maybe it’s the memories they conjure, resonates deeply with the theme of dreams.

The Fanu tracks are simply sublime. These two tracks are a stunning example of another drum and bass producer who frequently steps out of the mold. Here he’s crafted songs with particularly uneasy, dream-like atmosphere to them.

The Lucid Dreams album is totally facinating (and somewhat creepy). Worth checking out if you’re in anyway interested in lucid dreaming.

With all that said, this was all kicking about my subconcious when I put together the mix. None of that is particularly relevant to enjoying the mix though. If you like dub, breaks, a bit of hip hop and don’t mind the odd ambient excursion, then here is the mix!
